Russian Circles – Empros
The heavy instrumental ‘post’ everything Chicago based band, Russian Circles, is a genre defying group sprawling through explosive discordant sounds, yet countering with intricately mesmerizing woven melodies.
Easily a conundrum of classification. If an attempt is to be made with words, Russian Circles is like an explorative journey that transverses an aggressive, energetic catalyst of something say like the Chernobyl disaster, then decontaminates into an atmospheric state of reflective solitude. Constructive, dynamic, layered, and expansive.
Simply put, Epic.
Russian Circles upcoming full-length, Empros, is due out October 25, 2011
via Sargent House.

The Evens – Everyone Knows
Ian MacKaye. American singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and owner of DIY label Dischord. Enough said. One of my personal favorite artists and frontman of one of my favorite bands, Fugazi.
After Fugazi entered a hiatus, Ian MacKaye focused on ‘The Evens’, a two-piece, Washington, D.C. based band reveling in an unusual type of short-circuiting experimentation in the conventional realm of indie rock. Their self-titled album, ‘The Evens’, was released in March 2005 and was followed by ‘Get Evens’ in 2006. Both solid records. If you were to make up a genre, it would be post-post hardcore. Amy Farina holds it down on drums, and you might recognize her name from such bands as ‘The Warmers’, ‘Ted Leo’, and ‘The Pharmacists’.

Cut the excess.
‘Simple songs say all or nothing’. – Discord Records
‘The Warmers’ were a post-hardcore, Washington DC based band releasing two albums through Dischord Records. They recorded both albums in 1996.
Members. Alec Mackaye, younger brother of Ian MacKaye (‘Minor Threat’, ‘FUGAZI’), fronted the band on vocals and guitar. He also played in ‘The Untouchables’, ‘Faith’ and ‘Ignition’. Sidenote. He has appeared on the cover of Minor Threat’s self-titled EP, Minor Threat, and also on the cover of the Teen Idles’ Minor Disturbance EP.
Juan Luis Carrera (Bass and Vocals) also played in ‘Lois’.
Amy Farina (Drums, currently in The Evens) also played in ‘Mr. Candyeater’, ‘Moats Definitely’ and ‘Lois’.
